Play and Learn”

Цели: 1. формирование коммуникативной компетенции;

To begin with all the participants will be divided into two teams “Cats” and “Dogs”. You can see two emblems prepared beforehand.

To know which team you will play, take one of the small pictures out of the box. If there is a cat in the picture, you’ll play in the team which is called “Cats”. If there is a dog, your team is called “Dogs”.

Now you know which team you are and you are welcome to take your seats.

I wish you good luck and before starting the first contest let me introduce our jury.

I. The first contest is phonetical. You task is to pronounce these phrases:

1. A big black bug bit a big black dog on his big black nose.

2. Elizabeth’s birthday is on the third Thursday of this month.

3. How many cookies could a good cook cook if a good cook could cook cookies?

4. Four furious friends fought for the phone.

Well done.

II. The second contest is to remember countable and uncountable nouns about food. Team “Cats” name countable, team “Dogs” uncountable nouns. You’re welcome!

III. The third contest is to use some of the words about food. This contest is called ”What’s on the menu?” After an accident with some soup, the first menu is difficult to read. Write the words clearly on the second menu.

IV. The fourth contest is to practice 3 forms of English verbs. There are two boxes where you’ll put the cards with the 2 and the 3 forms of the verbs and name all three forms.

V. Find group of words which can be rhymed together. In each group there are two words.

Warm, weather, nice, snow, red, storm, together, gold, Fred, hand, hen, rice, night, cold, grow, white, clean, land, green, ten.

We could write a poem now, but I think we’ll thing a song which is very poetic I think. You know it . It is called “Watever will be” (Участники поют песню, чтобы сделать паузу в игре. Мы выучили песню “Whatever will be”)

VI. The next contest is called “Cross it out”. The task is to cross out the two correct answers each time. You should cross out:

(Участники выписывают по два относящиеся к каждой группе слова)

So, which word is left? (Key: zoo)

VII. The next contest is to act out the dialogue “At the shop”.

VIII. While two participants are preparing for the dialogue the others will complete the words

by adding the bottom half of each one.

^ BLACK, SAUSAGES, COMEDY, GLASSES, TROUSERS, SPRING

IX. The last contest of our today’s game is to describe the animals which names are in the names of your teams. All participants of each team should do it in turn.

It’s time to finish our game and to know the score. Our jury will count the points. And we will sing a song because even if we didn’t do everything correctly our spirit was high. And the song is called “If you’re happy”

^ St.Valentine’s Day

St. Valentine’s Day is a special day to honour love. It is most famous for being a time of celebrating ‘romantic love’. So as the 14th of February approaches, many people begin plans to find the right card, order flowers or make reservations for a candlelight dinner.

There are many theories about the origin of Valentine’s Day.

Valentine was a Roman priest who was martyred during a time of persecution of Claudius the Goth around A.D.270.

Valentine was a bishop of Terni martyred in Rome.

Valentine was a young man who helped Christians during time of persecution. He was caught and put in jail, became a believer there and was clubbed to death for this on February 14, 269. While in prison he sent messages to friends saying, “Remember you Valentine” and “I love you”.

Valentine was a priest who secretly married couples, defying the law of Emperor Claudius who temporarily forbade marriages.

Valentine was imprisoned for refusing to worship pagan gods. Making friends with the gaoler’s daughter, he is said to have cured her through prayer, and on the date of his execution (February 14) he is said to have written her a note signed “You Valentine”.

^ Classroom Ideas:

Offer you pupils to choose one of the possible theories and make a short speech to convince the others that their theory is the most powerful and true one. At the end of speeches let the whole class vote on which theory do they think is the most believable.

Christmas

As in most places, Christmas has lost its religious significance and has become a gigantic shopping, spending and television marathon. However, quote a lot of people visit church at Christmas, even if it is the only time in the year that they do so.

Before Christmas many children write letters to Father Christmas or are taken to big department stores where they meet him and receive a small gift. In general, children still hang up their Christmas stocking on Christmas Eve and Father Christmas delivers the present during the night. Most English children get up extremely early on Christmas Day to open their presents. Lunch is usually the main meal of the day although it is still called ‘Christmas dinner’. In the afternoon the Queen broadcasts a Christmas speech to the Nation. The evening is spent with the family, playing party games, eating, drinking, watching television.

Traditional foods are roast turkey with sausages, bacon and cranberry sauce, roast potatoes, Brussels sprouts and carrots, gravy (sauce made with the meat juices), and bread sauce (made with bread, milk and onions),with Christmas pudding ( a rich steamed pudding containing dried fruits, brandy and spices) to follow.

^ Classroom Ideas:

Offer to you pupils to write a letter to Father Christmas describing the three things you want more than anything and the three things you really don’t want (give reasons).

Good Friday. Easter Day

Easter is of course the most important festival in the Christian church year. It commemorates (on Good Friday) the crucifixion of Jesus, and his resurrection from the dead on Easter Sunday. The religious ceremonies and church cervices are the same in most places throughout the world. There are, however, a few traditions which are particular to Britain.

^ Hot cross buns

These buns contain currants and have small crosses on top. They are usually cut in half, toasted and buttered and eaten in Easter time. The cross on top of the bun commemorates the crucifixion. Hot cross buns evolved in the 18th century. It was said that the cross stopped them becoming mouldy. The buns were considered to have powers of healing, especially for children.

^ Easter eggs

The egg has been the symbol of new life and spring for centuries. To celebrate the arrival of spring pagans walked to a ‘magic’ tree in the village and the children gave each other coloured hard-boiled eggs. A great feast followed and the villages gave thanks to the goddess Eostre whom they believed was responsible for bringing the land back to life. Her sacred companion was a hare, which is why we now associate the rabbit with Easter. As Christianity spread across Europe, the egg then came to represent the stone rolled in front of Christ tomb.

^ Classroom Ideas:

Offer your pupils to write the recipe of a traditional Easter food in your country.

What is a ‘Limerick’?

Цели: 1. формирование коммуникативной компетенции;

Limerick is a humorous short poem, with three long lines and two short ones.

Limericks consist of 5 lines, which are rhymed and have rhythm. The 3 and 4 lines are rhymed together and have the same rhythm. They are different from the 1, 2 and 5 lines. Moreover they are shorter than the 1, 2 and 5 lines.

1. ____________________a

2. ____________________a

3. ____________ b

4. ____________ b

5. ____________________a

Limerics always have 5 lines, which answer the same questions:

    1. Who? Where from?

    2. What is he (she, it) like?

    3. What happened?

    4. What happened?

    5. How did it finish?

When did limericks appear?

The word ‘Limerick’ to call a verse appeared at the end of the 19th century after the name of Irish town Limerick. The most famous writer of limericks was Edward Lear who wrote books entitled "A Book of Nonsense," "One Hundred Nonsense Pictures and Rhymes," "Nonsense Songs," and "Laughable Lyrics" which were published before the word "Limerick" was ever associated with the aabba verse form. Edward Lear called his verses ‘nonsense rhymes’(«нонсенс», «бессмыслица»)

But the nonsense verse is older than Lear's. The drinking song has existed in Ireland for a very considerable time, the construction of which is identical with that of Lear's.

While writing limericks you should remember some rules:

  1. don’t break the rhyme

  2. keep the rhythm

  3. don’t make mistakes in stress.

Here is one of Lear’s limericks:

There was a Young Lady of Russia,
Who screamed so that no one could hush her;
Her screams were extreme,
No one heard such a scream,
As was screamed by that lady of Russia.

Now it’s your turn to write a limerick.

Which had a wonderful hat.
