Today we’ll speak about “Theatre”. We’ll learn new information about famous theatres of Britain and our country. We’ll search this information in the Internet.
Besides, with the help of the Internet we’ll visit Her Majesty’s Theatre in Britain and watch the episode of the very popular musical “ The Phantom of the Opera ” by Andrew Lloyd Webber. You express your opinions in your own Web-page.

Teacher: How do you understand this quotation?
I think it means that actors try to play their roles realistically, true to life in order to be successful, and in our life we very often want to seem better than we are , so we “play roles “ as actors do.
I agree with Tanya . As they say : Life is Theatre and We All are Actors in It.
We try to behave ourselves according to the norms of the society even if we don’t like to. That’s why we “play roles”.

Your home task for today was to prepare information about the meaning of the word “Theatre”. What does it mean?
Pupil: The word “Theatre” originates from a Greek word. Theatre is not only the art of acting but also dramatic literature and the place where plays are performed. It was the Greek theatre where the main types of plays were defined(tragedy, comedy and drama). It is interesting to know that the tradition of making rich, beautifully decorated costumes also came from the Greek theatre.
For centuries theatre has been the most popular spectator art for both rich and poor people. Nowadays theatre is less popular than cinema. Due to the popularity of television and video, theatre has lost its attraction. Besides, theatre tickets are very expensive, especially in good theatres. But theatre is still a part of the intellectual life of any country. We can say that theatre reflects the state of society and the mind of the nation. In every country theatre has its own history, traditions and peculiarities. In Russia puppet theatres were very popular. Theatre was the place of meeting and dating for the nobles. Actually some people enjoy occasional visits to the theatre. They look forwards to seeing an opera, a ballet, a comedy, a puppet show, a music or a variety show. It goes without saying that visiting a theatre is much more a festive event than going to the cinema.

People have different opinions about theatrical performances.
Read the text of ex. 2 at page 193 and say what the opinions and the arguments are.
Analyzing these opinions I can state that people have different tastes: some like operas very much, because the music is usually marvelous . Others find them dull to watch and very complicated to understand.
There are people, who enjoy ballet very much. They think that when you watch ballet you understand the beauty of a human body. It is the most exciting thing in the world. It makes a great impression on them. But some people don’t agree with them, they think it is a drag.
According to the opinion of some people operetta is so cheerful, magnificent and splendid. It teaches sincerity and makes them happy. But not all people share their opinions.
As for me , I prefer comedies , they put me in a joyful mood. I am so involved in the action that I forget that I am watching a play.
Teacher: And what theatre would you like to visit?
Pupil: I would like to visit one of the theatres of the world.
Teacher: I think you will have a chance today to visit one of the famous theatres of the world with a help of the Internet.
6. Работа в группах: поиск в Интернете информации о самых известных театрах нашей страны и Британии.
Teacher: Now your task is to search the information about the most famous theatres of Britain and Russia. You will work in groups. The first group will search the information about Russian theatres and the second - about British theatres.
Then you will change the information.
Speaker 1: the most famous theatres of Britain are : The Royal Opera House (Covent Garden), Old Vic , The Royal Shakespeare (Memorial ) Theatre, Her Majesty’s Theatre and many others.
The Royal Opera House (Covent Garden)- the home of a national opera and ballet; has a permanent staff of artists.
Old Vic- one of the most prominent and famous dramatic companies in Britain.
The Royal Shakespeare (Memorial ) Theatre has a permanent company, it’s repertoire consists mainly of the plays by Shakespeare.
Her Majesty’s Theatre is famous for it’s cast.
Speaker 2 : The most famous theatres of Russia are: The Bolshoi Theatre, The Detactive Theatre , The Moscow Taganka Theatre, The Maly Theatre and others.
The Bolshoi Theatre is the best known in Moscow. It was founded in 1776. Many outstanding singers and dancers starred on its stage.

Teacher: The Internet gives the opportunity to visit any theatre you like.
For example: Her Majesty’s Theatre. I want you to watch the episode of the famous musical «The Phantom of the Opera» by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Do you remember the plot of it?
Pupil1: As far as I know it is a love story , the main characters of the “Phantom ” are : Christine, Phantom, Raoul.
Pupil 2: The life of Christine Daae , a soloist of the Paris Opera House, was a mystery. Her beautiful voice appealed to the hearts and minds of people. But there was something strange in her: sometimes she disappeared from the Opera House or she acted as if she were led by an unknown force. Strange things happened at the Opera House but the company knew whose fault it was: the Phantom of the Opera. Christine loved Raoul de Chagny but she understood that they had no future because the French aristocrat could not marry a girl whose parents had been humble people. But Raoul believed that his love for Christine could break the prejudices. He learned that not only prejudices prevented Christine from dating him: a ghost who lived in the basement of the Opera House and loved her was her musical teacher. This Phantom had great power over her and guarded her carefully.
