Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear
Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair.
Fuzzy Wuzzy wasn’t fuzzy,
Why do you cry, Willy?
Why do you cry?
Why, Willy, why, Willy,
Why, Willy? Why?
Oh, no! Don’t go home alone!
Nobody knows how lonely the road is.
T. Good! And now, please, answer my questions.
10. Is it nice to have a holiday?
T.So let’s turn to your project works. But first listen to the beginning of the song and say what does the singer sings in the first lines.
(Прослушивание фрагмента песни)
T. Who can tell me what holiday is mentioned hear?
T. Yes, today there is no New Years day to celebrate, but still we shall speak about New Year I know that Sasha, Vera and Masha prepared the project work on this theme. Listen to Sasha first. Be very attentive and say how it sounds in English «встречать Новый год», «провожать Старый год».
P. The 1st st January is New Year’s Day. It is customary for people to remain awake until midnight on December 31st so that you may watch the old year out and New Year in Many parties are given on this night. The theatres, night clubs and restaurants are crowded. When midnight comes, everyone at the party stops whatever they have been doing to greet the New Year. People gather in the streets of big cities, they make noice in every way they can. Some people set off fireworks and blow automobile horns which are heard every where. After celebrating New Year’s arrival, many people spend this day quietly visiting friends. Many people make New Year resolutions. I made my New Year resolutions too.

T.So, pupils have your heard these phrases «встречать Новый год», «провожать Старый год». How is it in English?
P. I’ve learned a poem. Will you listen to it?
P. I’ve made a New Year resolution too.
(Зачитывает свое обязательство)
T. The next winter holiday is St. Valentine’s Day. It is very popular among young people.
P St.Valentine`s Day is not a legal holiday. Banks and offices do not close, but it is a happy little festival, especially for children and young people. It is celebrated among persons of all ages. A “valentine" means a special greeting card or a little present. It may also be the person who receives the gift. The greeting cards are often colored, had a red trimmings and pictures of hearts. I`ve prepared a valentine card. Here it is. Here is a poem. I shall read it.
The day is a time to send little gifts to those you love. Flowers and candy are favourite presents which sweet hearts send each other. It is a favourite day for parties, especially by young people. The hosts trim the hall with red and white paper hearts. I’ve made a Love Potion Puzzle for St. Valentine’s Day. Can you guess it?

T: Thank you. It`s very interesting. In spring Americans and English have some holidays too. The first is Mother’s Day. Mother’s Day in America come on the second Sunday in May. This is a day when Americans honour their mothers. Most mothers like to celebrate this day with the whole family.
P: Many people send their mothers a card or a gift. Some people take their mothers to a restaurant for dinner. It is the custom to carry a red or pink flower if one’s mother is dead. I’ve prepared a greeting card to my mother in English. Here it is.
T: You have heard that Americans honour their mothers in May. And when do English honour their mothers? Right you are.
T: Speaking about Mother’s Day we can’t forget about Father’s day though it is celebrated in June.
P: Father’s Day comes on the third Sunday in June. Many people send their fathers a card or a gift. During the autumn, some colleges celebrate Dad’s Day. They honour their fathers among the members and friends of the college. I’ve prepared a card for my father.
T: Thank you, Marina. A very nice card. And when do we honour our fathers? Do we honour the boys on this day too? How do we honour them?
T: Next spring holiday is Easter. Let’s speak about it. I’ve learned a poem about Easter.
P: Here are two or three jolly boys.
All of one mind.
We come a pace – egging
And hope you’ll be kind.
With your eggs and your bur
And will come no more pace – egging
Until the next year.
P: Easter is a church holiday. Easter marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring. At Easter people buy new clothes to wear on Easter Sunday. There is a popular belief that wearing three new things on Easter will bring good luck in the year. After church services many people like to take walks down the streets in their new Easter hats and suits. This colourful procession of people dressed in bright new spring clothes is called the “Easter Parade”. Another custom is decorating eggs for children. I’ve prepared the wreath of Easter eggs. How bright they are!
T: Yes, they are really bright and beautiful. We can see some pictures on the eggs: candles, chicken, flowers. You are very imaginative. Olya, have you anything to add?
P: In many parts of the country eggs are hidden in the yards and the children believe the Easter rabbit comes and leaves the eggs for them. That’s why Easter candy is made in the form of eggs, little chickens and rabbits. Eggs are the symbol of new life. An old English custom is to roll hardboiled eggs down a hill. The last egg to break brings good luck to the one who has rolled it. I’ve made an Easter Bunny, who brings eggs and candy for children.
T: Thank you. The rabbit is so pretty! By the way when will Easter be this year? Who knows? Do we have Easter Bunny in our country? Of course, no. But by our tradition children go from house to house in the neighborhood and collect colored Easter Eggs. Do the children in your neighborhood collect eggs for Easter? Did you collect eggs on Easter? Did you collect eggs when you were small?
T: Let’s turn to autumn holiday Halloween Alesha, Vitya and Olya have prepared their project work on this theme.
P: Halloween is the day or evening before. All Saints` Day. Many Halloween stories and games are hundreds of years old. Then people believed in devils, witches and ghosts. Now most people do not believe in devils. Children often wear masks over their faces they carry baskets and bags. They go from house to house and knock on the door. They ring the bell. When people came to the door, the children say “Trick or treat,” meaning “Give us a treat or we’ll play a trick on you”/ People give the children sweets, cookies and apple. A favourite Halloween custom is jack – o - lantern. The children scrape out a pumpkin and cut eyes, nose and mouth. They light a candle inside the pumpkin to scare their friends. They set jack – o – lantern in the windows.
I`ve prepared a word puzzle for you. Can you guess the words hidden here? .
P I’ve leaned a poem about Halloween. Listen.
P: I’ve got something to add. Some people in Britain are certain that if they put new shoes on a table, they will have bad luck. The English won’t kill a spider, especially the small red spider called money spider, as this is very unlucky. Other animals are symbols of luck. In England black cats bring good luck but in other countries they bring bad luck. White horses are also lucky. The most unlucky thing you can do is to break a mirrow. This bring seven years of bad luck. If you see a pin and picket up all the day is lucky. See a pin and let it lie you’ll have bad luck until you die. The number 13 is the most unlucky number and a combination of Friday with the number 13 is a day of disaster for superstitious people.
T: How do you understand the word “Superstitious”? What does it mean? Are you superstitious? And what about you? And you?
T: And now the last holiday of the year – Christmas. Andrey, Katya and Denis prepared this projectabout Christmas. Let’s listen.
P: Christmas day is celebrated on the 25th of December. It is the most important holiday of the year. Christmas is a family holiday. Shops, post offices, banks and business houses are closed for the day. Schools and Colleges are closed between Christmas and New Years Day. People stay at home and spend the time with their families. Everyone is buying Christmas Presents for friends and relatives. People send cards or Christmas Greetings to their friends. They whish their friends “Merry Christmas”. Every Family tries to have a Christmas Tree which is decorated with coloured lights. They also hang little toys, sweets on the tree and they put presents under the tree. When the day before the vocation begins, schools have Christmas parties. Children sing carols. They recite poems. Little children believe that when they are asleep Santa Claus comes to visit them with a big bag of toys. They often hang up large stockings to receive the presents.
P: I’ve made a crossword for you. Please, fill it.
P: I’ve made a “Manage Mobile”. You can see God’s mother and father and Christ himself in the cradle. And here is an angel. This is a star which sparkled when the Christ was born.
T: I know that Katya and you have learned a Christmas carol. Will you sing it?
(Исполнение песни «Silent Night»)
T: Very nice! Beautiful! Thank you. After so many words, so much speaking let’s have a break and move our body. Standup, please.
(Исполнение движений по песенку «Clap your hands »)
T: Sit down, please. And now let' s see how you know the vocabulary on these holidays. Please, take these small sheets of paper. Let’s read the words and find which word doesn’t fit.
(Выполнение заданий по карточкам)
T: I think that now we can share our opinion on the holidays we have discussed. Please, make up dialogues according to plans.
(составление диалогов по схеме)
T: Today at the lesson we have spoken about holidays which are as popular in Britain as in the USA. But there are some holidays which are very special. For example Thanksgiving Day, Presidents’s Day. Independence Day in the USA, or Guy Fawkes Day, May Pole Dance in Britain. At the desks you have the text about Guy Fawkes Day in Britain. Guy Fawkes was a person who lived long ago. Scim the test and finish the sentences below.
