Предисловие Настоящее пособие предназначено для студентов I-III курсов факультетов и институтов, готовящих специалистов в области государственного и муниципального управления, политологии и юриспруденции. Цель пособия – развитие навыков профессионально-ориентированного чтения, говорения и письма. Пособие состоит из восьми глав, расположенных по тематическому принципу, контрольных работ, тестов для самоконтроля знаний, грамматического справочника, словаря. Материал пособия дается в логической последовательности, что формирует у студентов целостное представление о предлагаемых темах. Тексты подобраны с учетом их познавательной ценности и содержат ключевую терминологию по специальности. Послетекстовые упражнения направлены не только на контроль и самоконтроль прочитанного, но и включают задания условно-коммуникативного, коммуникативного и творческого характера, ставящие целью подготовить студентов к самостоятельному высказыванию по изучаемой теме. Exercise 4. Read and translate the text. Russians take great pride in their schools and want to have best possible education. The FESTU is one of the best possibilities. The history of the FESTU began in 1899, which was founded with the purpose of providing highly qualified specialists for the economic and political activities of the region. Till 1993 it was the Polytechnic Institute, but then it was officially renamed to the Technical University. Now its full official name is Far Eastern State Technical University (Polytechnic Institute named after Kuibyshev V.V.). Nowadays the University teaches both full-time and part-time students in 28 lines and 50 qualifications. There are many Institutes within the FESTU: Mining, Marine, Institute of Civil Ship-Building, Engineering, Humanities, Institute of Economics and Management, Pacific Institute of Politics and Law. Pacific Institute of Politics and Law is one of the largest institutes: more than 500 full-time and correspondence students study there. This Institute has four departments: International Relations Department, Law Department, State and Local Government Department, Political Science Department. Future lawyers, judges, attorneys, mayors, governors, political scientists, prosecutors, ambassadors, consuls study there. The students of the University have favourable conditions for study and research. But it is difficult to enter the University. The applicants are required to take entrance exams. These exams are different for different departments. Entrance exams start in July, 15 for day-course applicants and a little later for correspondence-course applicants. Selection is based upon the result of entrance exams. Each faculty has a quota, which means that there is a limit on freshmen enrollment. FESTU has a five-year course of study for day-course students and a six-year course for correspondence-course students. Students carry out course projects and, finally, write a thesis. The academic year begins in September and ends in July. Every semester takes exams. After graduating from the University the best students can enter postgraduate courses which last three years. All subjects students study at the University are very interesting and useful. Usually at the first course they study Higher Mathematics, Physics, foreign language, the History of Russia and Introduction in speciality. Then at the second, third, fourth and fifth courses special subjects are taught. For example, Rome Law, Civil Law, Criminal Law and so on. Attendance at the lectures and seminars is compulsory. Many out-of-town students study at the FESTU. They can live in dormitories or in lodgings. The students’ life in the FESTU is interesting and diverse. Different students, organizations work there, including sports, social and professional ones. There is a University band and a students’ theatre. A students’ newspaper is also published. Our graduates have found that studying at the University is excellent preparation for today’s job market. Exercise 5. Answer the following questions:
